Raajneeti review – an absolutely performance driven film

Rajneeti, the latest Bollywood movie that has released today is all about politics. It is a culmination of Indian democracy and election system. In short, it is the story which tells us about the people who hold a high position in politics and control the fate and lives of other general masses. The star cast includes top names of Bollywood like Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar and Manoj Bajpai among various others.
One of the most powerful and pertinent political parables in India undoubtedly happens to be Mahabharat where brothers fought against each other to gain ultimate power. Prakash Jha employs the same politics of power in his contemporary adaptation of Mahabharat, deriving its primary plot and central characters from the epic. Rajneeti is mainly about the story of 2 cousins – Prithviraj Pratap (Arjun Rampal) and Veerendra Pratap (Manoj Bajpai). Veerendra believes that it is his birth right to become the leader of the party for which he joined hands with Sooraj Kumar (Ajay Devgan), a powerful Dalit leader as he wants to achieve his right at any cost.
Veerendra (Bajpayee) is derived from Duryodhan and Sooraj (Devgan) from Karan. Samar (Ranbir) corresponds to Arjun who fought the battle under the guidance of Krishna equivalent to Brij Gopal (Nana) – the passive participant in the war. The characters are effectively recreated and the core concept and conflicts are ably redrafted in the modern milieu.
Arjun’s character is related to Bhim while Samar’s is Arjun, Veerendra is Duryodhona and Brij Gopal is Lord Krishna. Like Michael Corleone, Samar takes over his father’s empire and becomes the top guy.
Raajneeti is an absolutely performance driven film and Jha not only extracts excellent performances from his cast but also balances each role so that no actor overshadows the other. Ranbir Kapoor as the protagonist who is willing to go to any extent to win the political race stands out from the towering cast with the most poised performance of his career so far. Manoj Bajpayee is theatrical but since his character demands that, he doesn’t end up hamming like he has been doing in recent roles. In fact he is in superb form and delivers a vicious negative act. Nana Patekar as the silent spectator and guide is so effective that despite taking a backseat his screen-presence is never diluted. Ajay Devgan, once again, speaks through the intensity of his eyes and is remarkable. Arjun Rampal is amazingly confident, playing a character divergent to the roles he has done so far. Katrina Kaif adds dignity to her role and also speaks fairly decent Hindi. Nikhila Tirkha as Ranbir’s mother is impressive. Shruti Seth is effective in her two-scene slattern act.
Overall, it is a great sensible movie made where potential of all actors have been used including Arjun Rampal. So, we’ll advice you to go for flick this weekend.
kites review – Watch Kites for its kool looks – Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori on screen

Movie – Kites
Director – Anurag Basu
Producer – Rakesh Roshan
Cast – Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kabir Bedi, Kangna Ranaut
Rating: 3 stars
I was great to see lovely couple Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori on screen, they look awesome together. Their love chemistry keeps Kites high. Director Anurag Basu frames Hrithik in the tightest of stiff close-ups.
Kites is about Jai (Hrithik) and Natasha(Barbara), two street-smart hustlers who are marrying into a rich and brutal Las Vegas family purely for the funds. Anurag Basu builds this hesitant relationship beautifully.
They can’t speak each others language – he doesn’t know Spanish and she can’t speak English – but their smouldering looks are louder than words.
They know their lane is fraught with risk but they can’t put the brakes on their wish. Inevitably the villains find out and then the chase begins. The weakest link in the film is the villains. The complete relatives are woefully underwritten and badly enacted.
Hrithik Roshan is stunning. And yet the movie does not become more than the sum of its parts because the second half is unexciting and outright silly.
Watch Kites for its kool looks. Surely, the film is at its most fun when we are soaking in the good-humoured chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara.
